Demand Boom Sees Oakland Port Add Direct Vietnam Service

19 Apr 2019

The Port of Oakland has announced an additional direct cargo service to Vietnam, launched on the back of strong US-Vietnamese trade growth.

Since 2015, imports from Vietnam through Oakland have grown by 29%, while exports have risen by 126% over the same period, according to Port of Oakland’s reported figures.

The new direct service has been named AC5 and will be operated by Pacific International Lines (PIL) in partnership with COSCO and Taiwan’s Wan Hai Lines.

Port of Oakland maritime director, John Driscoll, said: “PIL’s new direct service from Oakland is a good sign of increasing demand on Vietnam routes. Vietnam is showing strong growth in both import and export markets.”

Vietnam was Oakland’s third largest import market and fifth biggest market for exports in 2018, the port says.

The new AC5 route will call at Hai Phong, Vietnam, in a loop which will also take in visits to the ports of Nansha, Guangzhou and Yantian, China.

Ships with capacity of up to 11,900 TEU will be used to operate the service.
